SoSe 2007 - English for Librarians - Spree - Exercises
Exercise 2: Library terms and terminology
Objectives:
- Increasing your knowledge of LIS related vocabulary>
- understanding academic writing
|
Please read the following text by Michael Buckland:
Buckland, M. K. (2007). Naming in the library: Marks, meaning and machines. In Nominalization, nomination and naming in texts, ed. by Christian Todenhagen & Wolfgang Thiele. Tübingen, Germany: Stauffenburg Verlag, forthcoming. (preprint). The text explains and discusses central concepts of Knowledge Organization in libraries. After having read the arcticle you should be able to explain
- the process of vocabulary control,
- what does Buckland mean when he writes "naming is forward-looking" and "naming is backward-looking",
- what are, in Buckland's view, the differences between mention and meaning,
- and give examples for the following statement: "Linguistic expressions are necessarily culturally grounded, and for that reason, in conflict with the need to have stable unambiguous marks to enable library systems to perform efficiently."
Have a nice time
